Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, NC - The Steamers (4-1) took a 2-1 lead over the Wilson Tobs (1-4) at Historic Hicks Field in the bottom of the eighth on John Polonius's first home run of the season and Ryan Turner saved his third game in as many chances giving RHP Ethan Cole (1-1) his first win in relief.
The Tobs jumped out ahead of the Steamers and starting pitcher Brooks Fiala in the top of the first inning after Fiala hit Keith Morrisroe. Morrisroe stole second base and tagged to third on a fly ball by Alex Jones. Jeff Kremer then brought home the Tobs only run of the game with an RBI single to give Wilson a 1-0 lead.
Fiala threw excellent for the Steamers, he finished with 6.1 innings pitched, the one run on four hits; he did not issue a walk and he struck out four.
On the other side of the diamond starting pitcher Clay Murphy proved just as elusive to the Steamer bats. Murphy gave up his only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth after Ryan Porter reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mitch Wells singled Porter to third and Kevin Whitehead brought him home with a sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1-1.
Ethan Cole finished the top of the eighth on the mound for the steamers and it remained 1-1 into the bottom of the eighth when John Polonius, leading off the inning, parked one off of Lance Honeycutt on top of the storage shed behind Historic Hicks Field for a 2-1 Steamer lead.
Ryan Turner induced Chris Rawlings to ground into a game ending double play to pick up his third save of the season and secure the Steamers 2-1 victory.
