June 4, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) News Release
EDENTON N.C.- The Tobs got on the board quickly at Historic Hicks Field. In the first inning Jeff Kremer hit a RBI base hit to left field scoring Keith Morrisroe from third base.
The Steamers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Zach Stewart. Ryan Porter scampered home from third to score the run. The game stood at 1-1.
Brooks Fiala started the game for Edenton and pitched 6 1/3 innings leaving with runners on first and second base. He allowing 4 hits 1 earned run, and also fanned four Wilson hitters. Fiala walked one batter and also hit one hitter. He was relieved in the 7th by Dustin Quattrocchi. Quattrocchi faced one hitter in Ryan Daughtry. He retired Daughtry on a weak ground ball to 2nd base. Dirk Kinney, Edenton Steamers manager went to the bullpen again for Ethan Cole. Cole came in with two outs and both runners in scoring position. Brandon Elliot was at the plate for the Tobs. Elliot was called out on strikes and the threat in the seventh was over. The score remained tied at one.
Tobs starter Clay Murphy pitched a gem. He went six innings allowing only one run on two hits with six strikeouts. Murphy struck out the side in order in the bottom of the sixth, and his night was over. Murphy gave way to East Carolina University junior Lance Honeycutt. Honeycutt looked sharp early setting the first two hitters down on strikes and then after a base hit got a weak ground ball to shortstop Angelo LaBruna to end the threat in the 7th inning. The score was still deadlocked at 1.
The Steamers took the lead on a 3-1 pitch by Honeycutt to the lead off hitter of the eight inning John Polonius (West Virginia), hit a long homerun to deep center field. Honeycutt's final line was 2 innings pitched 2 hits, and 1 earned run.
The Tobs manager Bruce Johnson was ejected from the game in the ninth after arguing a call after leadoff hitter Tony Wieber hit a single to right field off Steamers closer Ryan Turner (S 3). Wieber was called out at second base after trying to extend the single into a double leading to the ejection. The Tobs made it interesting from that point but were retired stranding the tying run on third base. The final score was Edenton 2, Wilson 1. Lance Honeycutt suffers the loss (0-2) and Ethan Cole gets the win (1-0). The Tobs drop to (1-4) and the Steamers improve to (4-1) on the season.
The Tobs return home to Fleming Stadium Sunday evening for an exhibition game with the Fuquay- Varina Twins the first pitch scheduled for 5:05pm. Wilson will send RHP Clay Goodman (Tusculum College)(0-0 0.00) to the hill. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
