
Steamers beat Monterrey in season finale

(St. Louis, April 6, 2004) -- The St. Louis Steamers defeated the Monterrey Fury 5-2 April 5 at Arena Monterrey. The Fury led 1-0 at halftime, but Steamers forward Mike Apple scored three straight goals in a span of 8 minutes, 46 seconds of the third quarter to power St. Louis to the win. Player/Coach Daryl Doran also recorded a goal (his 20th of the season) and two assists in the game.
With the victory, the Steamers complete the 2003-2004 MISL season with a 14-22 record. St. Louis narrowly missed qualifying for the MISL playoffs, finishing one game behind Cleveland (15-21) for the sixth and final playoff berth.
Monterrey struck first in Monday's game, taking a 1-0 lead at 11 minutes, 39 seconds of the first quarter on a goal by Genomi Martinez. The game remained 1-0 through halftime.
Apple scored his first goal -- unassisted -- at 3:48 of the third quarter to make it 1-1. Apple gave the Steamers a 2-1 lead at 8:09 of the third on an assist from Doran. Apple capped his natural hat trick with a goal at 12:34 of the third on an assist from Sterling Wescott.
Doran scored his 20th goal of the season at 5:02 of the fourth to make it 4-1 St. Louis. Monterrey's Gaston Pernia scored eight seconds later to make it 4-2, but Mike Kirchhoff put the finishing touch on the Steamers' 5-2 victory with a tally at 7:09 of the fourth.
