Statement on Ice Conditions at the Pensacola Bay Center

February 21, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

A week ago, the ice in the Pensacola Bay Center was not freezing properly. It had been determined that there was an issue with the aging pipes located in the concrete arena floor that are used to create ice. This forced the immediate removal of the ice and the postponement of three home games this past weekend. CIMCO, the ice plant manufacturers, suspected a leak due to a drop in pressure in the ice plant. However, numerous tests have now indicated otherwise.

I have been in contact with SMG, the management company of the county-owned Bay Center, regularly throughout the process, and I have witnessed firsthand the tests performed. Over the course of the last week, different crews have performed other tests on the sub-floor pipe system to rule out other potential issues. Throughout these tests, the pressure has stabilized which lead to testing the freezing capabilities of the pipes. This test began Monday once the Globetrotters were finished which included starting the ice plant, cooling down the arena floor and testing areas of the floor to see if the water would freeze. Despite a tight turnaround to begin setup for Pensacon, they were able to get the test spots to freeze. Once Pensacon is over, the ice plant will be turned back on and the process of making ice will begin. If all goes according to plan with no further issues while they make ice, we will have ice in time for our $5 weekend games played on March 2 and 3.

Statement by General Manager for SMG Cyndee Pennington on the Ice Conditions at the Pensacola Bay Center

SMG has completed a systematic problem-solving process with industry experts which includes CIMCO, the ice plant manufacturers, and American Leak Detection to test the ice-making capabilities at the Bay Center.

It has been determined there is no leak in the sub-floor system. The piping in the floor has been flushed for potential obstructions and the system has been prepared to resume normal operations. SMG staff will begin making ice again on February 26 in preparation for the next schedule hockey game on March 2.
