-SPIKES CONTINUE UPSTATE NEW YORK TOUR TONIGHT: The State College Spikes continue a six-night, three-city trip through upstate New York tonight with the last of two games against the Pinckney Division-leading Auburn Doubledays at Falcon Park. The Spikes and Doubledays are due to meet each other ten times over the final 26 games of the NYPL season. State College is 28-33 against Auburn all-time, with a 13-17 mark at Falcon Park.
-LAST GAME: Derek Trent went deep for the first time this season in the second inning to help the State College Spikes take an early lead, but the Auburn Doubledays came back to take a 5-3 decision on Thursday night at Falcon Park to solidify their Pinckney Division lead. The Doubledays now hold a four-and-a-half game lead on the Spikes in the division. State College starter Joely Rodriguez allowed three runs in four innings, but struck out former major leaguer Chris Marrero (in Auburn on a rehab assignment from Triple-A) three times and collected four total strikeouts.
-SAMPSON LOOK TO STAY STRONG FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Adrian Sampson makes his sixth start of the year for the Spikes, and his eighth overall appearance, this evening. Sampson has struck out 26 batters while walking seven over 25 2/3 innings for State College since being drafted in the fifth round this year by the Pirates. The Sammamish, WA native has not allowed an earned run over his last ten innings on the mound.
-DOUBLEDAYS TAP MONAR FOR MOUND START: Left-hander Blake Monar is slated to start for the Doubledays tonight. Monar was the Nationals' 12th-round draft choice in 2011, and pitched for Auburn at the tail end of last year after a stint with the Gulf Coast League Nationals. This season, Monar has gone at least five innings in each of his last six starts, twice lasting six innings on the mound. Monar, a Rockport, IN native, was drafted out of Indiana University last year.
-TRIO OF SPIKES SELECTED FOR ALL-STAR GAME: Outfielders Barrett Barnes and Tyler Gaffney joined infielder D.J. Crumlich on the National League roster for the 2012 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, to be played Tuesday at Eastwood Field in Niles, OH. Barnes will be unable to play due to injury, but Gaffney and Crumlich will be on the field looking to lead the NL'ers to victory.
-SPIKE MARKS: Clay Holmes and Luis Heredia were each under consideration for All-Star berths, but their next starts each fell too close to the game to allow them to pitch in it...Jacob Stallings is tied for third in the league with 16 doubles, just two shy of the league lead in that stat...Holmes leads the loop in opponents' batting average (.132) and ERA (0.83)
