Aberdeen Eighth Inning Leads to Win

ABERDEEN, MD-The Aberdeen IronBirds (22-30) scored three unanswered runs, including two in the eighth inning, to earn a 3-2 win over the Connecticut Tigers (21-31) in the opening game of a three-game series at Ripken Stadium Friday night.

The game is the first of the year between the two clubs, who will also play a series at Dodd Stadium from August 18-20.

Connecticut scored a run in the first inning. CF Jake Stewart (1-5) doubled and moved to third base when RF Patrick Smith (2-5) reached on a throwing error by Aberdeen SS Joel Hutter. Stewart took home on the play for a 1-0 Tigers lead.

The Tigers scored another run in the fifth inning. SS Jared Reaves (1-4) led off the inning with a walk and Stewart reached base on a fielder's choice with Reaves forced out at second base. Stewart scored on a double by LF Danry Vasquez (2-5) for a 2-0 lead.

Aberdeen scored a run in the sixth inning against Connecticut RHP Angel Nesbitt (1-3).

RF Lucas Herbst (3-4) singled and scored on a double by SS Joel Hutter (2-4).

In the eighth inning 2B Creede Simpson (1-4) tripled and scored on a single by Herbst. A wild pitch moved Herbst to second base and a groundout by SS Joel Hutter (2-4) advanced Herbst to third base. He scored on a passed ball for a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers and Aberdeen IronBirds play game two of their series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Charlie Gillies (0-3, 3.47) gets the start for Connecticut against RHP Brady Wager (0-1, 8.22) for Aberdeen. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com.

The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League.
