March 2, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Lincoln Stars News Release
Jared Mangan broke a 2-2 tie with his 17th goal of the season at the 14:29 mark of the third period and the Lincoln Stars defeated the Tri-City Storm, 3-2, on Saturday night at the Viaero Center.
Both teams failed to score in the opening 40 minutes but combined for all five of the game's goals in the third. Lincoln (21-21-2-2) maintains sole possession of the sixth seed in the Western Conference and a two-point cushion on the Des Moines Buccaneers.
The Stars scored the first two goals of the third period but the Storm rallied back to tie the game. Mangan's goal came shortly after the expiration of a power-play. Mangan won a puck battle from the far boards, carried the puck to slot and scored his second goal in as many days and his 17th of the season.
Blake Montgomery opened the scoring 1:05 seconds into the third period with his 18th goal of the season. Layne Loomer stood steps away goaltender Cameron Korpi but slipped the puck to his left to Montgomery, who fired the puck into the empty cage
"For us to play the way we played in the second and not get rewarded," head coach Rocky Russo said, "and then go out in the third and find a way to bury one and take the lead was a big momentum shift for us and gave our bench a lot of confidence."
Keaton Peters doubled up the lead to move into a tie for the 13th most goals in Stars history. His initial shot from the near boards was denied but he hustled to the slot, received a pass from behind the net on the backhand, made the transfer to the forehand and scored. The Northern Michigan commit is now tied with Biagio Lerario, Mike Kramer and Dan Riedel with 40 career goals. Peters became the 16th player in franchise history to hit 40 goals and leads Lincoln with 20 tallies this season.
Yan Shostak stopped 27-of-29 shots to earn his 14th victory and fourth against Tri-City.
The Stars wrap up the weekend tripleheader Sunday afternoon at 4:05 at the Viaero Center. Lincoln has captured points in each of its last three games and in nine of its last 11 games. The Stars are 4-2-1 and can guarantee a season series victory with a win Sunday.
