Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints played the Lincoln Stars tightly through 55 minutes of regulation, but the Stars pulled away late en route to a 4-2 win over the Saints on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Ashton Calder scored the eventual game-winning goal at the 3:26 mark of the second period. Calder forced a strip steal of Jan Kern in the defensive zone and buried a shot through James Durham to give the Stars a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

The Fighting Saints were forced to kill off six penalties on the night, including a major penalty early in the third period. The Saints killed off that penalty and gained momentum and zone time, but were unable to make anything of it. Lincoln, however, capitalized on their chances.

A shot block in the defensive zone led to a 2-on-1 break the other direction, and Devlin McCabe found Josiah Slavin, who outwaited Durham and lifted a backhander to the shelf to give the Stars a decisive 3-1 lead. Just a minute and a half later, Paul Cotter added to the pile with a goal of his own at the 15:56 mark to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Saints added a goal late to get within two. Extended zone time led to a feed to the top where Brendan Bushy's shot was deflected past Stars goaltender Tomas Vomacka to cut the lead to 4-2 on the power play. That goal was as close as the Fighting Saints could claw to, as the Stars held on the rest of the way to pick up a key win.

Dubuque outshot Lincoln 34-30 for the game, and Vomacka was forced to be great at times, as he made 32 saves on 34 opportunities. Durham on the other end made 26 stops on 30 opportunities.

The Saints are back in action on Saturday to take on the Waterloo Black Hawks. Catch all of the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
