PEARL, MS -- On a beautiful Mother's Day afternoon at Trustmark Park, the Huntsville Stars defeated the Mississippi Braves 2-1 in game one of a five-game series. Both teams managed just four hits in the game.
The Stars (14-22) took an early 1-0 lead in the second when Rene Tosoni launched a solo homer into the Farm Bureau Grill.
Mississippi (23-13) responded in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Russell singled to start the inning. He took second on an errant throw by the pitcher and moved over to third on a Jose Martinez ground out. Russell then came in to score on a passed ball, tying the game at 1-1.
Huntsville took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Kentrail Davis tripled and scored on a Jason Rogers sacrifice fly to right field.
Jimmy Nelson (4-2) tossed six frames for the Stars, limiting the Braves to one unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight. Greg Holle (S, 2) came on to work a scoreless ninth and record his second save of the season.
Cody Martin (1-2) started and went six innings for the M-Braves, giving up two earned runs on three hits and five walks. Martin gave up one homer and struck out five.
In game two of this five-game series against the Stars, M-Braves right-hander J.R. Graham (1-3, 4.28) takes the hill. He'll counter Huntsville righty Ariel Pena (2-2, 3.48). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
