Suns Drop Mobile Opener, 7-5

May 12, 2013 - Southern League (SL) - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (20-13) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in Mobile on Sunday, as they fell to the BayBears (17-19) by a score of 7-5.

Despite a home run and a controversial, ninth inning two-run double from Kyle Jensen, the Suns lost their second consecutive series opener. In what amounted to the least successful start in Jay Jackson's (1-1) tenure with the Suns, the right-hander did not complete two innings and surrendered five runs on five hits at Hank Aaaron Stadium.

Jackson's night got off to a rough start in the very first inning. With a runner on second, Justin Greene singled to left to score Mike Freeman to put Mobile up 1-0. Several batters later, again with a runner on, Brent Clevlen hit the first of his two home runs on the night to give the BayBears a 3-0 advantage.

The home run ensured that, for the first time in his Suns career, Jackson would surrender more than one run in one of his starts.

The trouble continued in the second inning when Freeman doubled off Jackson to drive in Mobile's fourth run of the evening. Greene then followed with another run scoring hit, a single to left that plated Freeman and chased Jackson from the game after just an inning and two thirds.

Jacksonville would put its first dent in the scoreboard in the third when Jake Marisnick doubled in Christian Yelich off BayBears starter Andrew Chafin (1-1) to pull the Suns to within four runs. With Chafin pitching well, the BayBears lengthened the lead in the 6th on Clevlen's second homer and a solo shot from Keon Broxton, both off Rett Varner.

Jacksonville notched another run in the top of the eighth on Kyle Jensen's solo home run, the sixth of the 2013 season for Jensen and then scored a third run to begin the top the ninth inning on Marisnick's sacrifice fly.

Later in the ninth, Jensen came to the plate with two men on and still just one out, and hit what appeared at first to be a three-run home run to reduce the BayBears' lead to 7-6. However, umpires reviewed the call and determined that Jensen's drive had not cleared the wall, and was changed to a double with the score 7-5, Mobile.

Two batters later, with Jensen still on base and J.T. Realmuto on first representing the tying run, Audy Ciriaco struck out swinging to end the game and finish a frustrating night after a long road trip for the Suns.

The loss was the first for the Suns since their series opener at home against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. Despite the losing effort, James Leverton relieved Jay Jackson and shut Mobile down over three and a third scoreless innings, allowing just two hits in the process.

The Suns will face the BayBears in game two of the five-game series on Monday. Jacksonville will attempt to begin a new winning streak behind right-hander Sam Dyson (0-2, 2.45), while Mobile will turn to right-hander Archie Bradley (1-0, 1.13). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.

Suns fans can listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM, or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:50 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
