Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD-The United States Hockey League (USHL) announced Tuesday that Stampede CEO/President Tom Garrity has been named the 2014-15 Dave Tyler USHL Executive of the Year. He becomes the first member of the Stampede to ever take home the award.
"Tom has done an absolutely amazing job leading the Stampede through the transition from the Sioux Falls Arena to the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center," stated Brian Schoenborn, lead owner of the Stampede. "He rebuilt our business from the ground up, raised the bar on every level, and the best is yet to come. For our fans, sponsors, team and community as a whole, this past season was magical and we could not have accomplished any of it without Tom's hard work and visionary leadership. Moreover, his involvement with the USHL is helping elevate the entire league. Our ownership group is fortunate to have him leading us," added Schoenborn.
Garrity has been CEO and President of the Stampede since the 2011-12 season and has led the club to their three best years in franchise history at the gates. The Herd have increased their overall attendance by 110% in his time with the franchise and recently became the first team at the TIER I level to be named USHL Organization of the Year in back-to-back seasons (2013-14 & 2014-15).
Under Garrity in 2014-15, the Stampede set a USHL single season attendance record drawing 191,280 fans for an average of 6,376 per-game in 30 home dates at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center. The Stampede drew capacity crowds of 10,678 fans in October and in February; two of the largest crowds to ever witness an indoor sporting event in South Dakota.
The Stampede's success in the stands continued into the postseason where the team drew nearly 30,000 fans in just five playoff games while the club captured their second Clark Cup championship in franchise history. The Stampede finished the season averaging over 6,300 fans per-game, a 50% increase from the previous season in which they led the league in attendance.
Garrity was instrumental in the Stampede's community efforts as well. Under his guidance, the club donated over $400,000 to local charities, including a donation to the Scheels IcePlex. The Stampede also contributed to a number of other local organizations, including a new partnership with Comfy Cozys for Chemo which produces t-shirts specifically designed for children undergoing cancer chemo treatments. The Stampede wore tie-dyed jerseys for the first time ever and raised over $10,000 through a game-worn jersey raffle for Comfy Cozy's.
In addition to his duties with the Stampede, Garrity was part of the group that brought the USHL back to Madison, Wisconsin. He is currently the managing partner and actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the Capitols who were nominated as USHL Organization of the Year in their inaugural season.
Prior to joining the Stampede, Garrity has had several executive roles with major league sports franchises, including the Arizona Coyotes, Dallas Stars, Houston Astros, Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Wild.
Season, partial, group and suite tickets for the 2015-16 season are on sale now and available through the Stampede office by calling 336-6060. For the latest information on the Stampede, follow us on Facebook and Twitter @SFSTAMPEDE.
