Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders play host to the Edmonton Eskimos this Sunday, Aug. 15 at McMahon Stadium. The game is presented by Mount Royal University and kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Stampeders continue to lead the West Division following a 27-22 victory over the BC Lions at Empire Field last Saturday. At 5-1, the Stamps are off to their best start since opening the 2000 season 6-0-1. The Eskimos enter Week 7 with a 1-5 record following a last-minute loss to the Toronto Argonauts, a 29-28 decision in Edmonton.
Sunday's game marks the 50-year anniversary of the first game played at McMahon Stadium when Calgary hosted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Since that first game - the Stamps lost 38-23 to the Bombers - McMahon Stadium has continued to be a significant part of both the Stampeders' and the city of Calgary's history and as such will be honoured throughout Sunday's contest.
Prior to the game, Bill and John McMahon - sons of Frank and George McMahon, the men who were instrumental in the construction of the McMahon Stadium - will be honoured in the game's opening coin toss. A special halftime celebration, including members of the Stampeders alumni and former management, the McMahon family, the McMahon Stadium Society, the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary, will honour the legacy of the stadium with on-field and video presentations. Halftime will conclude with the McMahons recreating the ceremonial kickoff that opened the facility in 1960.
The 2010 season also marks the 65th anniversary of the Calgary Stampeders. This week, as part of the ongoing legacy, the Stamps will be celebrating the 1970s, including their 1971 Grey Cup victory, by wearing special 70s-themed retro jerseys as part of the CFL's Retro program.
Stampeders.com will also feature plenty of historical content throughout the week including a look back at the '70s, features on Red and White greats such as John Helton and Tom Forzani as well as a video feature on the 1971 Grey Cup victory.
Tickets for the game are still available by contacting the Stampeders' Ticket Office (403-289-0258 or toll free at 1-800-667-3267), Ticketmaster (403-777-0000 or online at Ticketmaster.ca) or by visiting any local Safeway or SportChek location.
