Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Stampede scored four unanswered goals and rallied to top the Tri-City Storm, 4-2, before 7,435 fans at the PREMIER Center Saturday night. Trailing 2-1 heading into the second, the Herd scored three times in the third period to secure their 32nd win of the season. Nolan Walker scored twice in the game while Kevin Conley and Colin Swoyer added goals of their own. Sioux Falls dominated play, outshooting Tri-City 31-10 on the night. Mikhail Berdin needed just eight saves to record his 24h win of the season in goal.
With the win, the Stampede remain just one point behind second place Omaha and Fargo and two points behind first place Waterloo with five games remaining in the regular season. The top two teams in the conference receive first round byes for the 2018 Clark Cup Playoffs.
The Storm went on a power play early in the contest and they cashed in on the first shot. Bryan Yoon sent a pass to the left point to Hugo Blixt who wristed a shot through traffic and the puck bounced under the left pad of Stampede goaltender Mikhail Berdin for a 1-0 lead just 3:50 into the contest. The Stampede picked things up from there, but were not able to put any of their eight shots past Tri-City goaltender Jake Barczewski and remained down by a goal. The Storm added to their lead with 56 seconds left in the period when Keaton Pehrson sent a pass in front of the goal to Fillip Forsmark who was able to wrist it past Berdin for a 2-0 advantage.
The Stampede were throwing everything they had at the Storm in the second period, putting up 18 shots in all, but Barczewski continued to play outstanding in between the pipes and frustrated the Herd during the period and two power plays. The Stampede finally broke through just after their fourth power play of the night expired when Nolan Walker danced inside the left circle and wristed a shot past the glove side of Barczewski to make it a 2-1 game. The Herd outshot the Storm 18-2 in the period.
In the third, the Stampede benefited from a little luck as Kevin Conley tied the game at 7:55 of the period. Conley blasted a shot from the high slot that sailed over the goal, but bounced off the glass and then off the back of Barczewski and into the net to tie the game 2-2. That gave the Stampede some energy and two minutes later the Herd took their first lead of the night on Nolan Walker's second of the night and 20th of the season. Walker took the puck behind the Tri-City net and wrapped back to the left of the goal before backhanding a shot right through the pads of Barczewski for a 3-2 lead.
The Storm tried to rally late, pulling their goaltender, but Colin Swoyer lifted a shot from his own zone all the way down the ice and into the empty net to secure a 4-2 victory for the Stampede to keep them within a point of second place in the West. Tri-City finished the night 1-for-2 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-4.
Sioux Falls now prepares for a huge weekend on the road as they travel to first place Waterloo for Friday and Saturday night weekend series. Puck drop is 7:05 PM each night and fans can catch both games on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and online at KELO.com starting at 6:40 PM.
