Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Ralston, NE - The comeback kids were at it again on Friday night and earned a point in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Omaha Lancers at Ralston Arena. Trailing 2-1 in the final 30 seconds, Max Crozier tied the game with just 18 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. With the point the Herd are now 32-13-6 and in sole possession of second place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Waterloo. The Stampede have now earned at least a point in four straight games and eight of their last nine games overall.
The Stampede came out of the gates with energy, but couldn't get anything to roll early as they came up empty on some quality scoring chances. The Lancers grabbed the first goal of the game at 11:44 when they converted on a turnover behind the net. Stampede goaltender Alec Calvaruso tried to whip the puck behind the net, but it went onto the stick of Harrison Roy behind the net and Roy sent a pass into the slot for Jan Kern who beat diving Calvaruso into the net. Omaha outshot the Herd 11-8 in the period.
In the second the Herd got back into the game at the 8:11 mark when Anthony Romano tallied his 21st goal of the season. With the puck loose in front of the Lancers net, Ethan Phillips sent a pass into the slot for Romano who quickly wristed the puck through traffic and beat Omaha goaltender Akira Schmid. Neither team would score again in the period and the game remained tied 1-1 heading into the third with Omaha outshooting the Herd 8-7 in the frame.
The Lancers didn't waste much time in the third, scoring just 1:42 into the period when Aleksi Peltonen drove into the offensive zone, stopped and spun around inside the right circle before wristing a shot hole through the five-hole of Calvaruso for a 2-1 lead. The Herd kept battling in the period to tie the game up, but remained down a goal heading into the final minute of regulation. Down to the final 25 seconds and with the goaltender pulled, the Stampede won a face-off draw and got the puck to Max Crozier in the high slot. Crozier skated over to the right circle and wristed a shot through traffic and into the goal to tie the game and force overtime.
Sioux Falls had a couple of chances early in the extra session, but couldn't connect. The Herd tried to make a rush up ice, but turned the puck over onto the stick of Jaxon Nelson who skated in alone down the left-wing wall and wristed a shot from the circle through the pads of Calvaruso to give the Lancers the victory.
Omaha outshot Sioux Falls 29-24 in the game and finished the night 0-for-5 on the power play while the Stampede were 0-for-3.
The Herd return to action Sunday at 5:05 PM when they host the Fargo Force in a special St. Patrick's Day tilt. Doors open at 4 PM and fans can take part in all kinds of fun including a scavenger hunt, photo booth and best dressed contest. Players will be wearing special St. Patrick's Day themed jerseys that can be won through a raffle to benefit the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
