Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
The Sioux Falls Stampede completed the 2010 USHL draft this afternoon, selecting 7 forwards, 6 defenseman and 2 goaltenders. Those 15 players along with the 15 players listed on the Stampede's protected list prior to the draft gives the Herd 30 total players that are protected going into tryout camp the first weekend in June.
"I was surprised that our first round pick was still available as I thought he would be one of the first three picks in the draft," said Director of Scouting and Player Development John Rosso. "We drafted a lot of strong defenseman all of whom have a good chance to make our team for this upcoming season. We are very excited not only for drafted players, but for our invite players as well. It should make for a very competitive camp," added Rosso.
Below is a recap of the Stampede's selections:
With their first round pick (11th overall) the Stampede selected forward Daniel Doremus of Colorado. Doremus spent this past season playing for the Colorado Thunderbirds of the Tier I Elite League (Midget Major) and was second in the team in scoring with 41 points (23g, 18a) in 38 games. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed shot has already committed to the University of Denver. He also appeared in three games with the Tri-City Storm this past season.
With their second pick in the draft (26th overall), the Herd selected defenseman Jordan Oesterle from Dearborn Heights, MI. He spent last season playing for Belle Tire in the Tier I Elite League and led the team in defensive scoring with 30 points (5g, 25a) in 47 games. The 5-foot-11, 150-pound left handed defenseman has several colleges looking at him, but he has yet to commit to a school. Director of scouting John Rosso says he is a great skater with good potential.
In the third round, Sioux Falls picked defenseman Joe Rubbelke from North St. Paul High School. A right-handed shot, Rubbelke led his team in scoring this past season with 52 points (24g, 28a) in 23 games. Currently a senior at North St. Paul, Rubbelke recorded 44 points (20g, 24a) in 25 games his junior year. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound de-man posted six points (2g, 4a) in 15 games in the Minnesota High School Elite League this past year. He was named to the All-Classic Suburban Team in hockey and in football.
The Stampede selected forward Mario Lucia in the fourth round (56th overall). Lucia is currently a sophomore at Wayzata High School in Minnesota and finished this past season as the Trojans second leading scorer with 43 points (14g, 29a) in 22 games. Last season, Lucia led the Wayzata Bantam A team in scoring and helped guide them to them to a state championship. His older brother Tony played in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers from 2004 to 2006. Rosso believes the 6-foot-1; 165-pound forward is a legitimate NHL draft pick when he becomes eligible in 2011.
In the fifth round (71st overall), the Stampede picked defenseman Alex Wiese. The White Lake, MI native spent this past season playing for Honeybaked Major Midget team in the Tier 1 Elite League. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder recorded 32 points (8g, 24a) in 48 games this past season with Honeybaked. Four of his eight goals were on the powerplay. Rosso says he is a very mobile, hard hitting defenseman with a good shot. Wiese played in three games with Traverse City of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) last year.
With their sixth round pick (84th overall), Sioux Falls selected defenseman Tyler Vanscourt from Corona, CA. Vanscourt began the year in Topeka before heading to Marquette in the NAHL where he posted eight games (4g, 4a) in 39 games. He was a plus-8 and finished third on the team in penalty minutes with 86. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed shot appeared in 29 games for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League in Canada during the 2008-09 season.
In the seventh round (96th overall) Sioux Falls selected forward Nolan Youngmun from Anchorage, AK. The 5-foot-10, 182-pound forward recorded 23 points (11g, 12a) in 49 games with the Wenatchee Wild of the NAHL. He was second on the team with 159 penalty minutes. He is a very physical player who creates havoc around the nets.
In the eighth round (105th overall) the Herd took forward Doug Clifford. The Woodhaven, MI native spent this past season with Traverse City in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he led the North Stars in scoring with 53 points (20g, 33a) in 56 games. He also finished with a team high plus-30 rating and led the Stars in playoff scoring with 12 points (2g, 10a) in nine games while helping them advance to the Robertson Cup Finals. Rosso says he is a very versatile player who can play center or wing.
At this point the Stampede had 23 players on their roster (including the 15 already on their protected list) and had to wait until all teams reached 23 players. All the teams resumed in the 14th round.
With their ninth selection (144th overall) the Stampede selected goaltender Jason Torf from Hermosa Beach, CA. The 6-foot-0, 185-pound netminder went 9-10-0 with a 2.85 GAA and a .916 save percentage in 24 games with Motor City of the NAHL last season. Torf has already committed to the Air Force Academy for the 2011 season.
Defenseman Charlie Hemstrom was the Herd's 10th pick in the draft (159th overall). A native of Romeo, MI, Hemstrom recorded 18 points (3g, 15a) and 114 penalty minutes in 48 games with Honeybaked (Major Midget) where he played with fifth round pick Alex Wiese. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound de-man is considered an offensive-defenseman with a very good, hard shot.
The Stampede selected defenseman Ben Parker of Faribault High School with their 11th (174th overall) selection. The sophomore finished fourth on the team in scoring with 42 points (7g, 35a) in 24 games this past season. Parker is 5-foot-10 and 175-pounds and has knack for scoring.
With the club's 12th selection (189th overall), Sioux Falls picked defenseman Joseph Lordo. The right-handed shot posted nine assists in 38 games while racking up 73 penalty minutes with the St. Louis Bandits of the NAHL last season. He helped lead the Bandits to the Robertson Cup Finals. Rosso considers him a tough, defensive-defenseman. Lordo is 6-foot-0, 190-pounds and a native of St. Louis, MO.
In the 19th round with their 13th pick (204th overall), the Stampede selected forward Kent Sherrer of the Ohio Jr. Blue Jackets. Sherrer finished third on the team in scoring with 67 points (16g, 51a) in 50 games while recording just six penalty minutes. The 6-foot-0, 175-pound left winger is considered a solid player with very good speed.
With their 14th pick of the draft (219th overall), Sioux Falls selected forward Liam O'Brien of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The 5-foot-11, 176-pound forward notched 38 points (13g, 25a) in 41 games for the Notre Dame Hounds Midget AAA team this past season. The 15-year-old led the Hounds in penalty minutes with 98. He is considered a power forward that will likely join the club for the 2011-12 season, but will be invited to tryout camp in June.
With their final selection in the 2010 USHL Entry Draft (236th overall), the Stampede selected goaltender Stephon Williams from Fairbanks, AK. He spent this past season playing for the Arctic Lions AAA team in Alaska where he went a perfect 12-0-0 with a 1.08 GAA and a .933 save percentage. Williams has good size at 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds and helped lead the Arctic Lions to a first place finish.
