Lexington Legends News Release
A team of ninth-grade students at STEAM Academy of Lexington has won the first Lexington Legends Stache Tank competition for their school with a design for a rock-climbing wall at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Originally, 28 teams of STEAM students presented ideas at the school on a variety of potential uses for an area beyond the right field fence at the ballpark, where a basketball court is currently located. Those were narrowed down to eight teams, who then made presentations to a group of community leaders and Legends employees at the ballpark in January. The concept is based on the television series Shark Tank, in which would-be entrepreneurs present their business ideas to a panel of potential investors. The name Stache Tank refers to the Legends' mustache logo.
The winning project, titled "Scaling the Wall to Success," outlined plans for the wall, which would be 30 feet wide and 18 feet tall. Nearby lockers would allow climbers to store personal belongings before climbing, and picnic tables would also be nearby for friends or family to watch the Legends game while waiting for climbers.
STEAM students Marcus Alzner, Noah Bentley, Julia Castorena, Hannah Kern, Ethan Martion, and Ava Schalk teamed up on the winning project.
"Stache Tank was an exciting experience for everyone concerned," said Legends President/CEO Andy Shea, who presented certificates to the winning team Thursday morning at STEAM. "We look forward to working with the winning group to help this project become a reality."
In addition, all ninth grade students at STEAM will participate in creating a mural on an existing wall near the basketball court.
The Legends also held a separate Stache Tank competition involving teams of students from William Wells Brown Elementary School, who presented ideas for a promotional item to be given to fans at a Legends home game. The winner will be announced Friday, March 25 at 11 a.m. in a school assembly at William Wells Brown.
