St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
St. Paul, MN-Midway Stadium has become a "House of Horrors" for the Blacksnakes after just two games. For the second straight night a St. Paul ninth-inning rally snatches victory from St. Joe, 4-3 on Tuesday night.
Early on, it was all St. Paul as they struck for a couple runs in the second and tacked on another when Adam Olow hit a solo home run in the third for a 3-0 lead. Through the fifth, the 'Snakes offense had just two hits and had yet to have a baserunner reach scoring position.
But in the sixth St. Joe rallied. Denver Kitch was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third on a Scooter Jordan single. Jake Whitesides promptly lined a base hit to right scoring Kitch and moving Jordan to third. That would end the night of St. Paul starter Charlie Ruud.
Mark Burke then singled in Jordan to pull St. Joe within one at 3-2. Wil Quintana followed with his league-best fourth home run of the year-a two-run shot just beyond the left field wall-that propelled the 'Snakes to their first lead of the night.
However, Donovan Graves and Jesen Merle could not close out the win in the ninth. Graves came on in the fourth and was outstanding. But in the ninth, a bloop single started St. Paul's winning rally. The rally was capped off with a bases loaded, full-count, two-out walk forcing in the winning run, 5-4 for the Saints.
Graves (0-1) allowed just the two ninth inning runs in his 4.2 innings, but suffered the loss. Matt Hammons (1-0) pitched a one-two-three top of the ninth for the win.
St. Joe looks to rebound in the third game with St. Paul at 7:05pm Wednesday evening. It will be a match up of opening day hurlers, as Evan Thomas (0-0) starts for St. Joe and St. Paul counters with Mike Meyer (0-1). With the first pitch at 7:05pm, we will begin our Heartland Health Pre-Game Show at 6:45pm on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
