St. Paul Comes Back to Win in Ninth

St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release

St. Paul, MN-A classic pitcher's duel came down to the ninth but St. Joe was not able to hang on in a 3-2 setback in St. Paul. St. Paul scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to outlast the 'Snakes in the first game of the four-game series that was delayed an hour and a half by rain in the top of the second inning.

'Snakes starter Andrew Edwards was only able to pitch one inning due to the lengthy rain delay in the top of the second. But the bullpen was outstanding, led by Josh Jarman's four shutout innings. J.C. Huguet then made his season debut and allowed just one run in three innings.

St. Joe scored first on an aggressive baserunning play in the fourth. With Ben Thomas on second base, Denver Kitch hit a flyball deep in to the right field corner where Adam Olowe made a great running catch. Thomas tagged up from second and, as Olowe crashed into the wall, came around third to score the game's first run just ahead of the relay.

It remained 1-0 until the seventh when St. Paul tied it on a two-out single by Rob Fischer. But the 'Snakes would re-take the lead right back on a Cody Nowlin solo home run in the eighth, 2-1.

However they would not be able to hold on. Three soft St. Paul singles in the ninth would combine to score a pair of runs to end a long night at the ballpark just before midnight.

Kevin Rival (1-0) took the win for St. Paul while Jesen Merle (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

St. Joe continues the series with St. Paul Tuesday night at 7:05pm. Blacksnakes' right-hander Dustin Kupper will make his season's debut against Charlie Rudd, another right-hander. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm and our Heartland Health Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45pm on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
