St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
St. Joseph, MO-The Blacksnakes (26-22) jumped out to a big early lead before Pensacola (24-24) rallied for an 11-7 win at Phil Welch Stadium. The game closed the first half and salvaged a game in the series for the Pelicans.
St. Joe scored in each of the first three innings against Clark Girardeau, including a three-run third inning, to take a commanding 6-2 lead. Jefferson Infante's two-run single in the third broke the game open.
But Pensacola would not go away and would get within 6-5 before the 'Snakes added an insurance run in the sixth on a Jake Whitesides single. Whitesides ended a 10-pitch at bat with his single to left field, scoring Jimmy Mojica with a two-out run to make it 7-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, St. Joe's Cody Nowlin hit a ball over the fence down the right field line that was ruled foul. That lead to pitching coach Mark Nussbeck's ejection, and Nowlin's the following inning.
The Pelicans finally overtook St. Joe with a three-run eighth, taking the lead on George Branch's two-run home run, 8-7. St. Joe threatened in the bottom of the eighth but could not tie the game before Pensacola put the game away with three more runs in the ninth.
Denver Kitch had three hits for St. Joe, and Whitesides, Mark Burke, Cody Nowlin and Jefferson Infante each had a pair of hits for the offense, with Whitesides and Infante combining to knock in five runs.
Tomorrow night the Blacksnakes start with a fresh ledger to begin the second half against the first half champion, the Lincoln Saltdogs. Evan Thomas (3-5) will take the hill for the 7:05pm game time, and the gates open at 6pm tomorrow night at Phil Welch Stadium.
