Chico Outlaws News Release
FULLERTON, CA - Jason Van Meetren homered and drove in four runs, while right-hander Phil Springman tossed seven solid innings to lead the Chico Outlaws to an 8-3 victory over the Orange County Flyers in the opener of a two-game weekend series at Goodwin Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.
The Outlaws immediately went to work in the top of the 1st inning against Flyers starting pitcher Robert Salini. Steve Boggs singled to open the contest - tying a club record with a hit in his 18th consecutive game - and scored three pitches later when Jesse Kovacs doubled off the center field wall. Later in the inning Kovacs came home on a double play grounder to give Chico an early 2-0 lead. Orange County picked up a run in the bottom of the 1st when Peanut Williams singled home Garry Temptleton II. The Outlaws went to the long ball in the 3rd inning - with two outs and Kovacs and Daniel Nava aboard, Van Meetren connected for a home run high over the left field wall...then on the next pitch Jake Ferris lined a solo homer to left to put Chico up 6-1. Orange County answered with two runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Rich Pohle singled home Jon Marshall and Williams knocked in Dave Bacani with an RBI groundout to cut the Outlaws lead to three.
The score stayed 6-3 until the 7th inning...while Springman held the Flyers offense in check (retiring eight in a row and 14 of 16 at one point), Chico put the game out of reach in the top of the 7th when Van Meetren singled home Boggs and Nava scored on a wild pitch by Orange County reliever Dan Arizmendi, giving the Outlaws an 8-3 lead. Jake McLintock came on in relief for Springman in the 8th and got the final six outs, retiring the Flyers in order in the 9th to give Chico its second straight win and 15th in the last 17 games...Orange County dropped their ninth in the last 10 contests.
Springman (2-0) struck out six and didn't walk a batter in earning the win...Salini (3-2) was charged with all eight Chico runs in taking the loss. The Outlaws had nine hits on the night, with Boggs going 3-for-3, while Kovacs and Van Meetren had two safeties apiece...Templeton went 2-for-4 as the Flyers were held to seven hits on the evening. Saturday's win upped Chico's season record to 21-8 and kept the first place Outlaws three games ahead of Long Beach in the race for the Golden Baseball League's first half title...Orange County dropped to 15-15 on the year. The finale of the two-game set is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with right-hander Jake McKinley (2-1) on the mound for the Outlaws...the Flyers will counter with righty Alex McRobbie (2-0).
