Springfield Hammers Hooks 6-1

Springfield, MO - With the series tied at a game apiece, the Springfield Cardinals had a chance to win their short three-game set with David Kopp on the Monday Friday night.

After a scoreless first inning, it would be the Hooks that would strike first in the top of the 2nd. JD Martinez led off the inning with a double down the right and would score on a one-out RBI double by Kody Kirkland to give Corpus Christi a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals would respond in the bottom of the 2nd as Aaron Luna single with one out and moved to third on a base hit by Xavier Scruggs. Jose Garcia followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to even the score 1-1.

Springfield took their first lead of the game in the 3rd as David Kopp led off with a single and, on the very next pitch, Tommy Pham lined a two-run homer over the bullpen in left to give the Cardinals a 3-1 advantage.

In the 4th, the Springfield offense kept the pressure on Corpus Christi as Xavier Scruggs blasted a solo homer, his 4th of the year, to increase the lead to 4-1. The Cardinals added another run in the 5th as Tommy Pham doubled and scored on an RBI single by Pete Kozma to make it 5-1.

David Kopp was outstanding again at Hammons Field as he threw six innings allowing just a run on six hits while striking out six. Tyler Norrick would pitch a scoreless 7th and Blake King a scoreless 8th to keep the Cardinals comfortably in front.

In the bottom of the 8th, Tommy Pham added to his tremendous night as he blasted another home run, a solo shot this time, to put Springfield up 6-1. Pham would finish the night 4-for-5 with two homers and two doubles to set the season high in total bases with 12.

Jason Buursma entered in the top of the 9th out of the Springfield bullpen and retired the Hooks in order to complete the 6-1 victory and take two of three from Corpus Christi.

Springfield will begin a three-game series with San Antonio Saturday night at 6:10pm at Hammons Field. The Cardinals will send right hander Brian Broderick (6-2) to the mound against left hander Tyler Lumsden (5-10) for the Missions.

Saturday night will be fun for fans young and old as the Springfield Cardinals turn back the clock to the 1970s. The Cardinals will be wearing Tie-Dye themed Cardinals jerseys will be available for fans to bid on throughout the game on the concourse. After the game, the winning bidders will go down on the field to receive their autographed uniforms from the players and coaches. All proceeds from the auction will go to benefit the National MS Society and all fans are encouraged to dress in the 1970s theme!
