Springfield Jr. Blues News Release
The Springfield Junior Blues have announced that defensemen Jack Callahan of Red Bank, NJ has committed to Quinnipiac University (ECAC Division I) for the 2010 or 2011 season.
In his first year in the NAHL, Callahan has played 18 games for the Junior Blues. The 18 year-old has tallied 10 points on 2 goals and 8 assists and is tied for second among NAHL defensemen in points scored.
"My decision to leave the East Coast and join the Jr. Blues this year has helped me gain the exposure necessary to attract the attention of Division I programs," said Callahan. "More importantly, Coach Wyler's program has helped me improve the intensity and physicality of my play. The play in the NAHL is fast-paced. It forces you to be at the top of your game night in and night out."
Callahan was highly recruited by the Blues. Coincidently, he was coached by a former college teammate of Jr. Blues President, Bob Gordon.
"Dick Carlson(Gordon's college teammate) called me and told me what a wonderful kid and talented player Jack was. With that recommendation, I knew we were getting a good one", stated Gordon.
"The Jr. Blues organization has been great to me. From my initial contacts by Coach Maher, I have been made to feel like I am part of something special. The owners , the coaches, the boosters, my teammates and the fans have all made me welcome. The "Nellie" (Springfield's Nelson Center) is an electric place to play." John Gaffney, a former NJ Rocket teammate, told me it was a great place to play and he was sure right. Not only is it a wonderful place to play, but coach Wyler is one of the best coaches I have ever played for. I never want to let him down nor my teammates."As for Quinnipiac, it offers the combination of academics, athletics and campus environment I was looking for. When I visited the school last summer I felt like it was a place where I would fit in. The opportunities to play for the Bobcats, experience the tremendous support of their fans, compete in the ECAC and play close to my home town is a dream come true",! Callahan added.
And now that he has a college scholorship in hand, how does he see himself helping the Jr. Blues?
"As I see it, the best way to the Jr. Blues organization for the opportunities they have given me here is to get a winning streak going and have our team ready come playoff time. I am excited to be a Bobcat down the road but right now i am just as excited to wear my Blues uniform."
Callahan joins teammate, John Bobb (Army), as Jr. Blues players who have committed to division I programs so far this year Callahan commented. "No doubt we'll shortly be joined by others."
