Sporting KC Re-Signs 21-Year-Old Goalkeeper John Pulskamp
May 5, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release
Sporting Kansas City has re-signed goalkeeper John Pulskamp to a three-year MLS contract through 2025 with an option for 2026, the club announced today.
Pulskamp has made 37 combined appearances for Sporting Kansas City and Sporting KC II since arriving from the LA Galaxy Academy in April 2019. The 21-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2021, starting six MLS matches and earning his first call-up to the United States Men's National Team for a two-week training camp last December in Carson, California.
One of the best young goalkeepers in American soccer, Pulskamp capitalized on his MLS debut last April by becoming the third-youngest keeper in league history to win a regular season match in a 2-1 victory at the New York Red Bulls. He ended 2021 with a 3-2-1 record as an MLS starter, picking up a 2-1 win over Austin FC on May 9 and securing his first clean sheet in a 2-0 triumph over the LA Galaxy on Oct. 27 at Children's Mercy Park.
A native of Bakersfield, California, Pulskamp began his professional career by signing for Sporting Kansas City II in 2019. He has started 31 matches for the club, posting 105 saves across the USL Championship and MLS NEXT Pro-including five saves in SKC II's inaugural MLS NEXT Pro game against Colorado Rapids 2 on March 27.
Pulskamp joined the U.S. senior national team late last year and was an unused substitute in a 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Dec. 18. He previously featured for the U.S. U-20s in a friendly against regional rivals Mexico on Jan. 18, 2020, and competed at a U.S. U-18 training camp in June 2018 at Compass Minerals National Performance Center, Sporting's world-class training home in Kansas City, Kansas.
Pulskamp arrived in Kansas City in 2019 after a two-year stint in the LA Galaxy Academy, where he competed at the U-17 and U-19 levels in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. During his time with the Galaxy, he also went on trial with English Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth in 2018. Prior to joining LA, he represented youth academies Real So Cal and Central California Aztecs in his home state.
