SPORTING KANSAS CITY DRAWS WITH SAN JOSE, REMAINS IN FIRST PLACE
Sporting KC remains at the top of the Eastern Conference following a dramatic 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes. Forward Teal Bunbury responded to San Jose's 85th minute goal just 45 seconds later with a goal of his own as Sporting Kansas City kept hold of first place in the East at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.
ARNAUD BREAKS CLUB APPEARANCE RECORD
Sporting Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud has broken the club's all-time record for career regular season appearances. Arnaud broke the record of 237 appearances in Sporting Kansas City's 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes last Saturday. Assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin formerly held the record.
After earning his debut in his rookie year as a fifth-round draft pick out of West Texas A&M, Arnaud, 31, has accrued a total of 19,310 minutes since2002, while scoring 43 goals and contributing 34 assists before earning thecaptain's armband prior to the start of the 2010 season.
PLAYOFF RACE HEATING UP
With two matches left to play in the 2011 MLS regular season, Sporting Kansas City currently sit in first place in the Eastern Conferencewith a total of 45 points through 32 matches, one point clear of the Philadelphia Union.
If the season were to end today, Sporting would qualify for the playoffs as one of the three automatic births from the Eastern Conference. Despite their favorable position in the table currently, just two points separate first place in the East (Sporting Kansas City) and the final wild card sport.
Should Sporting Kansas City fail to grab one of the top three spots in the East, they would then need to qualify for a wild card berth, which is determined by the next four teams with the highest point total, regardless of conference.
