
Spitfires Stung in Shootout 4-3

SARNIA, ON. - The Spitfires were looking to improve as they fell to the hands of the Sarnia Sting on Thursday 4-2. The Spitfires travelled to Sarnia for a division rivalry rematch. In the first period, the Spitfires dominated the Sting as they outshot them 14-4 throughout the period. The Spitfires would strike first just under eight minutes into the game as Greentree fed an alley-op pass to Davis and he went in on Surzycia alone and scored his 16th of the season. The Spitfires led 1-0 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, it would be the same story from the Spitfires with a dominate period but they let the Sting back into the game. The Spitfires would go up 2-0 with a goal from Cristoforo, it was his 4th on the season from Abraham and Zhugin. A minute and a half later, the Sting would strike to cut the lead in half with Schwindt's 13th on the year. Just over six minutes later, the Sting would tie the game at 2 with a goal from Ryan Brown. After 40 minutes of play, the scoreboard was knotted up at 2 however the Spitfires had a 26-9 shot lead.
In the third period, the Sting were given a powerplay late in the game and they capitalized on it as they would score to go up 3-2. With just under 3 minutes to play, the Spitfires would tie the game up as Abraham found the back of the net. We were off to OT tied at 3.
In the overtime frame, the Spitfires were assessed a hooking call and were able to kill it off. Both teams had chances but both goaltenders kept the puck out. We were off to a shootout.
In the shootout, Greentree and Brown would miss in the first round, in the second round, Davis would be stopped but Sikic would score and the pressure was on the Spitfires. Smith was the third shooter and he scored five-hole to even it. The third shooter for Sarnia was Schwindt and he would score and Sarnia would take the win.
The Spitfires are back in action on Thursday for the start of a 3 in 3 when the Otters come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
