Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON. - The Spitfires desperately needed a win to help for their playoff aspirations after falling to the Firebirds twice on Thursday and Friday. On Sunday, the Mississauga Steelheads were in town for a cross conference battle. The Steelheads have been quite solid with a record of 6-1-3-0 in their last ten games while the Spitfires have gone 3-5-1-1. On Sunday afternoon, the Spitfires were not able to make up any ground and ultimately lost 6-1.
In the first period, it would be a back and forth battle as both teams traded quality scoring chances. The Spitfires would fire 12 shots on goal however Ivankovic stood tall and stopped them all. The Steelheads would score to goals just 6 minutes apart to take a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. They had 14 shots through the first.
In the second period, the Steelheads would extend their lead to 3-0 just under three minutes in off a Spitfire turnover. Just six minutes later, the Spitfires would strike back on the powerplay as Spellacy cashed in on his 16th. The Spitfires had numerous opportunities but could only score once on the powerplay. Late in the frame, with just seven seconds left the Steelheads would score to make it 4-1 heading into the intermission. The Spitfires had a narrow 22-21 shot lead after 40 minutes.
In the third period, tempers would flare as both teams would pick up multiple roughing calls and fighting majors. As a result, the Steelheads would score on the powerplay and go up 5-1. Late in the game the Steelheads would add another and take this one 6-1.
The Spitfires are back in action on the road as they travel north for a 3 in 3 in North Bay, Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The action starts on Thursday in the Bay at 7:00pm.
