Toledo Spitfire News Release
(Toledo, OH)- Despite a strong effort, the Toledo Spitfire were unable to put points on the scoreboard this weekend against the visiting Columbus Comets, falling 50-0. The Comets, now 3-2 in the Great Lakes Conference of the NWFA, proved to be tough competitors. The well-rounded team was led by QB Crystal Davis, who had a host of offensive weapons to choose from. Backs Shelly Gates and Cynthia Freeman and TE Erin Taylor chewed up the turf for major yardage with Taylor providing PAT's and impressive kickoffs. Taylor scored first for the Comets off a 41 yd pass from Davis, with Robin Lench scoring on a 1 yd run with 4:58 left in the 1st quarter. The Spitfire saw a spark when CB Sarah Dowd intercepted Davis, but the Comets got the ball back on the next play off another interception. Cynthia Freeman scored her lone TD in the 2nd, and the game began to have the feel of a rout when Dowd intercepted yet another one of Davis' passes. Although the Spitfire were unable to score any points off the interception, the team continued to fight for yardage with every possession. However, the Comets' defensive line proved to be a thorn in the side of the usually dynamic Spitfire QB Casey Stinson, who ended the game with 125 total passing yds and a scant 9 yds rushing. In fact, the Comets' D-line was highly effective, holding the Spitfire offense to 167 total yds. WR April Gladieux led the Spitfire with 5 receptions for 72 yds. TE Jori Welchans had 4 catches for 38 yds. RB Leah Hawkins led the team in rushing with 30 yds. The Spitfire defense kept its spark during the 3rd quarter, holding the Comets to a single TD (17 yd pass from Davis to Lindsay Eckles). Heading into the 4th the Spitfire still had time to put numbers on the board but the Comets quickly sealed the victory with Gates running for 2 TD's, 11 and 41 yds respectively. Eckles caught her 2nd TD pass, a 32 yarder from backup QB Latrice Johnson, and the Comet celebration began. The Spitfire, now 2-2 in the Great Lakes Conference, head to South Bend, IN on Saturday, May 15 to take on the Thunder who are coming off a 31-0 victory over the Wisconsin Riveters. You can hear that game online by joining Mik Gonzales and Tracey Roberts at http://cherokee.totalink.net for the play-by-play. Kickoff is at 8:00/EST.
