Saginaw Spirit News Release
(Saginaw, MI) -- The Saginaw Spirit reached a new milestone Thursday night, with a 5-1 victory over the Erie Otters. The Spirit won their 30th and points 60 and 61, and took sole possession of second place in the OHL West, jumping over idle Plymouth. The Spirit's victory was driven by two powerplay goals, and three point nights from Vaclav Meidl (NAS '04) and Tom Pyatt (NYR '05).
The Otters challenged Saginaw early in the first period, but the Spirit opened scoring at 3:32 of the first when Meidl scored. Patrick Asselin and Tyson Gimblett assisted. The Otters struck back, tying the game 1-1 when forward Vince Scott scored on a 2-on-1 break. The Spirit retook the lead 2-1 five minutes later, when Pyatt scored from Meidl and Ryan McDonough. The goal was all the Spirit needed for victory.
Saginaw added to their lead at 3:54 of the second period, when forward Michal Birner (STL '04) scored on a slapshot from the blue line. Pyatt assisted. Saginaw scored twice in the third period on late powerplays, at 16:45 (Patrick McNeill (WAS '05) from Pyatt and Meidl) and 19:41 (Chris Chappell from Tyson Gimblett) to secure the 5-1 win.
Spirit goalie Francois Thuot had 38 saves in the effort, earning the game's first star.
Saginaw moves to 30-26-1-0, with 61 points, good for second place in the OHL West, a point behind first place Windsor. The Spirit resume action Saturday night at 7:11 PM at the Dow Event Center, when the Sarnia Sting come to town.
