Spirit Sweep Weekend, Beating Windsor Spitfires in 5-4 Shootout

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Windsor Spitfires 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night at TheDow Event Center. Winger Garret Ross scored the winning goal for the Spirit. Center Ivan Telegin added two goals, while Jordan Skellett contributed three assists in the effort. The win moves the Spirit record to 10-4-2-0 with 22 points for the season.

The Saginaw Spirit opened the game with a goal scored by center Ivan Telegin at 3:32. Assists were given to winger Jordan Skellett and defenseman Joe Underwood. At 7:08, the Spirit advanced the score when defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) notched a goal with assists from Skellett and Telegin. The first period ended with the Spirit ahead 2-0.

Both teams guarded their nets at the beginning of the second period, but Telegin found the net at 12:43. Assists from wingers Jordan Skellett and Josh Shalla put the Spirit up 3-0. The Spitfires scored their first goal of the game on a power play at 14:44 when winger Greg Nerrisz (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) tallied a goal. Assists were credited to center Adam Henrique (NHL NEW JERSEY DEVILS) and winger Taylor Hall. Windsor's center Scott Timmins notched the next goal, shorthanded, at 15:49 with assists from defenseman Mark Cundari and winger Taylor Hall. The score was brought to a tie when Hall tallied an unassisted goal at 17:01. Saginaw did not leave the second period without a goal; Spirit center Tyler Murovich found the net on a power play at 18:21, scoring his third goal for the season. He was assisted by center Vincent Trocheck and winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL PHEONIX COYOTES). The period ended with the Spirit holding their lead 4-3.

The Spitfires opened the third period with a power play goal from Timmins at 3:17. Assisted by defenseman Cam Fowler and winger Austin Watson, the goal moved to a 4-4 tie. With no goals scored in overtime, the game continued to a shootout. Josh Shalla scored the winning goal for the Spirit, ending the game 5-4.

Saginaw goalie Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) ended with 36 saves while Windsor's goalkeeper Troy Passingham had 18 saves for the game.
