
Spirit Sweep Home Weekend Series with 4-3 Overtime Win over Guelph

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit swept the home weekend series with a 4-3 overtime win against the Guelph Storm Saturday night. The team finishes out the weekend on the road with a 2:00 PM contest against the Plymouth Whalers Sunday. Spirit center Jack Combs contributed two goals and one assist while winger Chris Chappell added two goals in the effort. The Spirit have earned 70 points and move their record to 32-20-2-4 for the season.
Guelph winger Cody McNaughton kicked off scoring for the Storm, knocking in a goal at 10:11 in the first period. Winger Taylor Beck and center Peter Holland assisted on the play. Saginaw winger Chris Chappell responded with a powerplay goal at 15:51, with assists coming from center Jack Combs and defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES). The period ended in a tie, 1-1.
Chappell tallied another goal for the Spirit early into the second period, finding the net at 8:42. The shorthanded goal was assisted by defensemen Joe Underwood and Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES). Guelph defenseman Tim Priamo followed suit, scoring for the Storm at 14:07. The goal was assisted by wingers Dennis Hollenstein and Tyler Melancon and capped off the period in a tie, 2-2.
Combs was quick to add a goal for the Spirit at 4:16 in the third, with assists coming from winger Jordan Skellett and defenseman Joe Underwood. Guelph tied things up, as defenseman Nathan Martine notched a goal at 6:01 and was assisted by wingers Ryan Baldwin and Yves Bastien. The period ended in a 3-3 tie, pushing the contest into overtime.
Overtime was short-lived, as Combs found the net after 42 seconds of play. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) and Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES) were credited with the assists. The goal put the Spirit ahead and secured the 4-3 win over the Storm.
Saginaw goalie Edward Pasquale finished the game with 31saves and Guelph netminder Brandon Foote posted 19 saves.
