March 20, 2010 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Saginaw Spirit News Release
(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit tied their first round playoff series against the Kitchener Rangers at one game apiece, courtesy a 3-1 victory at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw Saturday night. The game saw Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale earn 24 saves for the game's first star honors, while Anthony Camara, Jordan Skellett and Barry Sanderson each chipped in a goal to give Saginaw their first victory of the 2010 post season.
The Spirit jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second period following a scoreless second. Rookie winger Anthony Camara scored his first ever playoff goal at the 12:31 mark courtesy an assist from defenseman Ryan O'Connor. Center Jordan Skellett gave the Spirit a two goal advantage following a power play marker at 16:33 from center Michael Sgarbossa and defenseman Peter Hermenegildo.
The Spirit entered the third period facing an energized Rangers attack. Kitchener center Michael Catenacci scored a short handed goal at 5:10 in the third from winger Gabriel Landeskog, moving the score to 2-1. The Spirit defensive and special teams units made two big plays in the later stages of the game, first killing off a five-on-three Rangers power and later a renewed Rangers attack that saw a six-on-four situation due to a pulled Kitchener goaltender. Spirit winger Barry Sanderson secured the win with an insurance goal, scoring an empty netter from defenseman Brad Walch in the final :26 seconds.
Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale (NHL ATLANTA THRASHERS) posted 24 saves on 25 shots, while Rangers goalie Brandon Maxwell (NHL COLORADO AVALANCHE) turned aside 28 of 30 shots.
Catch the Spirit! The series continues with Game Three on the road, at Kitchener on Monday, March 22 at 7:30 PM. The team will return to The Dow Event Center to host the Rangers on Wednesday, March 24 at 7:11 PM.
