Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit played the Plymouth Whalers on the road on Tuesday afternoon at the Compuware Arena.
The Whalers got on the board first when Assistant Captain Stefan Noesen sent the puck past Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson. His goal off the face-off was assisted by Colin MacDonald and Rickard Rakell. Sixteen seconds later the Spirit retaliation came from Garret Ross, who tied the score at one. Ross' goal was assisted by Captian Vince Trocheck and Dalton Young. Plymouth regained the lead once more before the first period closed, when Rickard Rakell scored his eighth goal of the season assisted by Simon Karlsson and Danny Vanderwiel. The first period of play concluded with a 2-1 score in favor of the Whalers.
The second period was scoreless but not uneventful as it turned out to be a battle of the goalies. Saginaw goalkeeper and Red Wings prospect Jake Paterson showed some of his best work in the second period, stopping 18 Whalers shots. The Spirit were not far behind in shots on goal as Matt Mahalak stopped 13 Spirit shots.
Plymouth opened the scoring again in the third period when Matt Mistele scored a goal on a rebound, assisted by Gianluca Curcuruto and Zach Bratina. Mistele's goal gave the Whalers a 3-1 lead early in the third. Minutes later Ottawa Senators draft pick Stefan Noesen scored a power play goal that gave him 10 on the season. The Whalers outshot the Spirit 39-37 and the game ended 4-1 giving Plymouth the victory at home.
