Windsor Spitfires News Release

The Spitfires were looking to make it two in a row as they beat the Petes last night 8-2 at the WFCU Centre. A tougher task was ahead of them as they traveled to Saginaw for a matchup with the Spirit. They were coming off a 5-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers. The last time these two teams faced was just 3 days ago as the Spirit came back from a 4-2 deficit and defeated the Spitfires 5-4. On Sunday afternoon, the Spitfires could not handle the high powered Saginaw offence and the officials and lost 5-2.

In the first period, the tracks to the sin bin were well groomed as both teams headed to the box numerous times. The Spirit took advantage of it and scored the games first two goals and both on the powerplay. With under 5 minutes to play in the period, the Spitfires were able to respond. Greentree flew down the wing on a 4 on 4 opportunity and his shot was stopped but the rebound landed on the stick of Woodall and he scored his 2nd of the season. The Spitfires trailed 2-1 on the scoreboard but had a 14-11 lead in shots after the period.

In the second period, it would be the same story as the Spitfires were penalized multiple times. The Spirit would not score on the powerplays but did use the momentum to score the games next two goals and take a 4-1 lead.

In the third period, the tracks to the box were the most worked part of the ice surface. The Spitfires were able to kill off another penalty and were rewarded with a powerplay. On the powerplay opportunity, the Spitfires would strike. An end-to-end dash by Cole Davis cut the Spirit lead to two as Davis scored his 15th of the year. Abraham and Donoso had assists on the goal. Late in the game, Abraham and Donovan would get in a dust up and of course the Spitfires were sent to another penalty kill. The Spirit would score to make it a 5-2 game and that would do it.

The Spitfires are back in action on Thursday when the Sarnia Sting come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
