Spirit Defeat Power, 2-0

UNIONDALE, NY - Shannon MacMillan scored a goal and added an assist as the San Diego Spirit downed the New York Power 2-0 Saturday evening at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

MacMillan, recorded her 50th WUSA career point when she tallied her first goal of the 2003 season, scoring in the 16th minute. Aly Wagner, the top draft pick of the 2003 draft, tallied her first professional point, assisting on the MacMillan goal.

Scottish national team star, Julie Fleeting, put the Spirit up 2-0, when she headed home MacMillan's corner-kick in the 28th minute.

MacMillan was also a force on the defensive end, blocking Emily Janss' shot off the goalmouth in the 74th minute.

Both Janss and Christie Welsh led the Power offense with four shots each. New York out-shot San Diego, 16-10, but weren't able to find the back of the net. Jamie Pagliarulo had seven saves for San Diego, while Carly Smolak made five saves for the Power.

The Power were without the services of Sara Whalen (ACL - R), Kristy Whelchel (ACL - R), Jaclyn Raveia (hairline fracture to her right collarbone), Saskia Webber (Calf Strain - R). Cheryl Salisbury made her Power debut, but had to leave the game in the 45+ minute, due to a right calf strain that she has been nursing.

San Diego were without Amy Sauer (Ankle Strain - L) and Jen Nielsen (Broken Left Toe).
