Carolina Courage News Release
CARY, NC - The Boston Breakers rebounded from last week's loss to down the Carolina Courage 3-1 at SAS Stadium on Saturday night. The defending WUSA champion Carolina Courage is still looking for its first win, after dropping its first two games at home.
Maren Meinert put the Breakers ahead in the sixth minute, when she curled a wicked corner kick over Courage goalkeeper Maite Zabala, beating her to the back post. It was Meinert's second goal of the season, and her 12th points in seven games against the Courage.
In the 22nd minute Boston doubled its lead. After Carolina failed to clear a Breakers corner kick, Monica Gonzalez pounced on the loose ball in the Courage penalty box and ripped it past Zabala for a 2-0 advantage. The tally was the first career goal for Gonzalez. The Courage was dealt a bigger blow in the 32nd minute when midfielder Hege Riise suffered an knee injury after getting tangled up with two Boston defenders along the sideline. The Norwegian team captain left the game and will undergo evaluation on Monday.
Dagny Mellgren extended the Breakers lead in the 73rd minute, after eluding the offside trap. Kristine Lilly furnished the final pass to Mellgren, who walked in alone against Zabala. Mellgren's goal was her second of the 2003 campaign.
Carolina cut the deficit to two one minute later, when Birgit Prinz hammered a low shot past Boston goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. Last year's Founders Cup MVP has registered a goal in each of her two games this season.
The Breakers complete their three-game road swing, improving to 2-1-0, while the Courage falls to 0-2-0. Carolina will host New York next Saturday. The Power are also winless at 0-3-0.
Boston will return home to take on the Philadelphia Charge, a team that has been idle for two weeks, following an opening weekend loss at San Jose.
