
Washington Freedom downs San Jose CyberRays 2-1

SAN JOSE, CA â The Washington Freedom made good on some key opportunities as they beat the San Jose CyberRays 2-0 in a fast, frenetic match. With this victory, Washington, which played in last year's Founders Cup championship game, improves to a 4-3 series record overall against San Jose, including two wins last season. Washington now also holds their best start record to date, moving to 3-0-0 in the standings. San Jose is 1-1-0.
Washington scored its first goal in the ninth minute when San Jose defender Keri Sanchez, new to the CyberRays this year, was called for a handball in the penalty box. Mia Hamm's penalty kick sailed past San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene into the right-hand corner of the net for Hamm's third goal of the season.
The CyberRays almost tied the game on a Sissi corner kick in the 16th minute. Her kick into the middle of the penalty box gave Sanchez a 12-yard shot, but the attempt was deflected by Freedom keeper Siri Mullinix, who fisted the ball up and over the cross bar.
It was the the first of many frustrated shots taken by the CyberRays, who continued to shoot wide and high of the posts. In all San Jose accounted for seven shots in the first half alone, two on goal. The team took another 12 shots, five on goal during the second half but couldn't score. Mullinix finished with seven saves.
Washington's second goal came in the one-minute of stoppage time tacked onto the first half. Forward Jacqui Little, who played with the CyberRays in 2001, took the ball up the right side of the field, crossing it to midfielder Lori Lindsey near the far post, who headed it for the score.
CyberRays defender Brandi Chastain was issued a yellow card in the 39th after protesting a foul called on teammate Michelle French. Freedom midfielder Lindsay Stoecker earned a yellow in the 56th.
