Spirit close-in on Capitales

July 3, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

The North Shore Spirit extended their winning streak to three games Sunday afternoon with an impressive 8-1 victory over the Quebec City Capitales.

The win moved the surging Spirit to within 3 ½ games of the first place Capitales in the North Division Standings.

North Shore ace John Kelly (5-2) went the distance for his first complete game of the season. Kelly limited Quebec's hitters to just one run on five hits while striking out three. Rick Kirsten (1-3) took the loss for the Capitales.

Kelly got all the run support he would need in the third. Doubles by Jose Garcia, Yuri Sanchez and Marcos Agramonte put two quick runs on the board for North Shore. Rob Fischer then connected for his sixth homerun of the season, a towing blast to left field. After a Vic Davilla single, catcher Alex Trezza crushed a Kirsten offering deep over the fence in right, putting North Shore out in front 6-0.

The Spirit would add to their lead in the eighth. Davilla led-off with a line drive basehit to center. Travis Oglesby followed with a majestic homerun to left center field, his tenth of the season.

Quebec broke up Kelly's shutout bid in the ninth. Following a leadoff triple by Geoffrey Tomlinson, Eddie Lantigua picked up his 51st RBI of the year with a single up the middle.

The Spirit will close out their series with Quebec on Monday, July 4th at Fraser Field. Game time is set for 5:05PM.
