(WINDSOR) The Saginaw Spirit battled the Windsor Spitfires to a 4-3 shootout loss Thursday night at the WFCU Centre. Garrett Ross and Tyler Murovich returned from their five game suspension, with the latter scoring the first Spirit goal of the game. Also notching goals for the Spirit were Barry Sanderson and Josh Shalla. The loss puts Saginaw's record at 17-15-3-1 and 38 points for the season.
The Spirit outshot the Spitfires in the first period, but it was the Spits who came ahead in the opening frame with two consecutive goals from their top line. The first goal came from winger Kenny Ryan (NHL TORONTO MAPLELEAFS) at 6:01, assisted by defenseman Mark Cundari (NHL ST. LOUIS BLUES) and winger Dale Mitchell (NHL TORONTO MAPLELEAFS). Center Eric Wellwood (NHL PHILADELPHIA FLYERS) tallied Windsor's second goal at the 8:24 mark with an assist from Mitchell. The first period finished with a score of 2-0 Windsor.
Saginaw rallied in the second period with two straight tallies of their own. The first Spirit goal came from center Tyler Murovich at 3:53, assisted on the goal by defenseman Ryan O'Connor and winger Jordan Szwarz (NHL PHOENIX COYOTES). Center Barry Sanderson found the net at 14:14 on a shorthanded unassisted breakaway goal to even up the contest. The Spitfires returned fire at 18:19 with a power play goal scored by Cundari, courtesy assists from Mitchell and winger Justin Shugg. The second period ended 3-2 Windsor.
The Spirit tied the game at 16:05 into the third with a goal by winger Josh Shalla, assisted by winger Jordan Skellett and defenseman Brad Walch. Windsor and Saginaw battled through a scoreless four-on-four 5:00 minute overtime period and into a shootout. Despite the concerted effort, the Spitfires sealed the victory after Wellwood scored the shootout goal.
