Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners had four two-run extra base hits, including a two-run double and two-run triple from Matt Ciaramella, in a 9-3 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York Penn League action Friday night at LeLecheur Park.

Ciaramella, who had entered the game hitting .111 (4-for-36) with just two RBI, had his two-run double in the second inning for a 2-0 Spinners lead and his two-run triple in the fourth to give Lowell a 4-2 lead. He added an RBI single in the fifth inning to finish the game with three hits and five RBI.

Heriberto Guzman added a two-run double in the fifth inning for a 6-2 advantage and Dee Williams had a two-run triple off Expos reliever Isaiah Wright for a 9-2 lead. Wright had retired the first eight batters he faced before allowing a single and a walk before the two-run triple.

The Expos only real offense of the game came in the fourth inning. After just one base runner (on an error) over the first three innings, Doug Vroman led off the fourth for Vermont with an infield single and Ofilio Castro followed with a walk. After a popout, Steve Mortimer lined a double to rightcenter to score Vroman and Castro to tie the game 2-2.

But after Mortimer's two-run double, the next 15 Vermont batters would be retired until a one-out double by Castro in the ninth inning. Castro moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch for his second run and Vermont's third run of the game.

Expos starter Steven Cook (0-4) allowed a team season-high seven runs on eight hits over five innings for the loss, while RJ Swindle (2-0) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings of relief to pick up the win for Lowell (15-20).

The 9-3 victory was a bit of revenge for the Spinners, who lost four of five games to the Expos July 12-16 in Lowell. The teams will play game two of this three-game series on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. with Jon Felfoldi on the mound for the Expos. Vermont (16-18) returns home to Centennial Field for a two-game series with Oneonta on Monday and Tuesday nights.
