Spinners Bats Stay Quiet in Loss to Tri-City, 1-0

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners simply can't get to the .500 mark as the dropped their fourth chance to pull back to even on the season as nine walks by the pitching staff and just five hits for the offense found the team on the short side of a 1-0 final to the Tri-City ValleyCats Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Tri-City (49-19) had a chance to score right out the gate loading the bases with two outs, on a single and pair of walks, but Zach Good induced a fly out to end the threat.
Lowell (33-35) threatened in the bottom half of the second, as singles by Mookie Betts and Dreily Guerrero put runners on the corners with two down, but Matt Gedman grounded into a force to end the inning.
Scoreless through four, the ValleyCats broke through in the top of the fifth as the first three batters of the inning reached on a pair of walks and a single. After a line-out, MP Cokinos delivered a sacrifice fly to give Tri-City a 1-0 lead.
From there, the Spinners had little going offensively, as the ValleyCats held on for a 1-0 win and a split of the brief two game series.
Good went the first two innings, pitching in-and-out of trouble, walking three and allowing two hits, but keeping the ValleyCats off the board. Jacob Dahlstrand (4-4, 4.42) picked up his second consecutive loss, allowing the game's lone run on two hits and five walks, striking out three over five innings. Jadd Schmeltzer pitched the game's final two innings, allowing only a walk while striking out two to extend his scoreless innings streak to 10.1 innings since coming off the disabled list.
No Spinner reached base more than once, with Matt Marquis picking up the game's lone extra-base hit with a double. Mike Miller, Betts, Aneury Tavarez and Guerrero added the only other Spinners' hits.
The Spinners welcome the Vermont Lake Monsters to town for the season's final two home games. It's Back to School Night with Notebook giveaways for the first 1,000 fans when Justin Haley (0-1, 1.88) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
