UNIVERSITY PARK - The State College Spikes snapped their six game losing streak on Tuesday evening with an 8-5 win over the Auburn Doubledays.
The Spikes bullpen had a strong outing, as three relievers combined to toss the final 4.2 innings of the game without allowing a run, which allowed the Spikes to come back from an early deficit. Offensively, it was a total team effort as seven different players had at least one hit, and six different had at least one RBI.
State College drew first blood this evening as Brian Friday started the bottom of the first with a single and later came around to score on a Matt Cavagnaro base knock to open the scoring at 1-0. Auburn responded quickly scoring in their next turn at bat to knot the score, but the Spikes answered right back. In the bottom of the second, Marcus Davis smashed a double into the left-centerfield gap to plate Miles Durham and give State College a 2-1 advantage.
The Doubledays and Spikes matched zeroes in the third and fourth before Auburn posted a four spot in the fifth to take what seemed to be a commanding lead at 5-2. But the Spikes would not go quietly as they tied the game for the second time in their half of the sixth. Andrew Walker and John Fitzpatrick had back-to-back hits to start the frame and plate the first run of the inning. After Marcus Davis reached on a fielder's choice to put two runners on, Smelin Perez chased home the pair with a triple to knot the game at 5-5.
State College capped their comeback an inning later as they would take the lead for good in the seventh thanks to a two-run double from Durham that made it 7-5, before tacking on another run in the eighth to make the final score 8-5.
Michael Felix (1-1) got the win for the Spikes after tossing two scoreless inning of relief, and Daniel Moskos pitched a scoreless eighth to set up Adam Simon for his fifth save of the season.
The Spikes will close out their season with a three-game series with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers that will get underway tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a great Fleece Blanket courtesy of the Spikes. Great seats are still available for the contest and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com or in person at the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
