Spikes Overrun by Late 'Cutters Rally

STATE COLLEGE - Cole White accounted for four of the State College Spikes' five runs, but a six-run eighth inning propelled the Williamsport Crosscutters to a 9-5 win at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Wednesday night.

 

White's two-run double in the third inning, coupled with the runs he scored in the third and in the fifth, helped put State College (20-19) ahead, 4-1, heading into the eighth. However, following a walk by Edgar Duran, Williamsport (23-16) was able to string together three straight hits off of Spikes reliever Kevin Decker (3-1), and then another walk and two doubles off of Trent Stevenson to go ahead, 7-4.

 

Pat Irvine, who went 3-for-4 and finished a home run shy of the cycle, brought the Spikes within two in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double, but two runs off of a pair of errant rundown throws in the top of the ninth combined with a scoreless bottom half to produce the final result.

 

Gift Ngoepe brought in White with an RBI triple to center field in the second for the Spikes' other run.

 

Decker took his first loss of 2010 after allowing a total of four runs on four hits and a walk while striking out one in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander was issued his first defeat after going 8-0 at the College of Charleston this past spring before joining the Spikes.

 

Colton Cain started for State College and allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work, walking one and striking out three. Cain and Decker combined to set down 13 straight Crosscutters from the second through sixth innings.

 

Bryan Morgado (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with a scoreless seventh inning preceding the Williamsport rally. Eric Pettis (3) earned the save, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out two in the final two innings. The loss was the Spikes' first this season when leading after seven innings.

 

Thursday, the scene shifts to Historic Bowman Field for the Spikes and Crosscutters as they meet for a 7:05 p.m. matchup. State College will send left-hander Zac Fuesser (0-1) to the mound for his fourth start and ninth appearance of the year. Williamsport will also go with a left-hander as Mario Hollands (3-1) gets the ball for his eighth start of the season.
