State College Spikes News Release
(STATE COLLEGE, PA) - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Tuesday that State College Spikes first baseman and designated hitter R.J. Dennard has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of August 31-September 7, 2015.
Dennard becomes the second Spike to earn one of the NYPL's weekly awards this season. Right-hander Juan Perez won the NYPL Pitcher of the Week award for the week of July 13-19 earlier in the summer.
The Armstrong State product took the honors after smashing the first two homers of his professional career in the same game on September 2 at Mahoning Valley. Dennard also produced at least one hit in his last seven games, with four straight mulit-hit games to close out the year.
Over a six-game span this week, the Cardinals' 2015 39th-round draft choice hit .478 (11-for-23) with three doubles, five runs batted in and 5 five runs scored. Dennard also improved his batting average from .190 on August 30 to .250 by season's end.
