STATE COLLEGE - Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Monday that State College Spikes outfielder Cole White has been named the New York-Penn League's Player of the Week for the week of July 26 - August 1, 2010.
White earned the award with a 9-for-16 performance at the plate over the past seven days, including a pair of three-hit games. The West Point alum also increased his average 121 points over the last week to .288, drove in seven runs, and slugged his first homer of 2010 this past Friday against the Williamsport Crosscutters. White rejoined the Spikes at the beginning of this season after being called away from the team in the middle of 2008 to serve a two-year active duty commitment in the United States.
The Midland, Texas native is the fourth Spike to win one of the NYPL's weekly awards in the last four weeks. First baseman Matt Curry was the league's Player of the Week for July 12-18, and tight-handed pitchers Tyler Waldron (July 19-25) and Kevin Decker (July 5-11) have each won the NYPL Pitcher of the Week award.
