Erie Otters News Release
London, Ontario - One final time for the 2022-23 season, the Erie Otters and London Knights would battle. Friday night would take the Otters to the Budweiser Gardens for the last time, looking for the season split with their Midwest Division rival. This divisional contest would come less than a week after the last time the two met; Saturday, February 4 in front of a sold-out Erie Insurance Arena. London would score three third period power play goals from Logan Mailloux in the Saturday contest to lift London. With Nolan Lalonde back in net for Erie, the Otters would look for a big win in the midst of their long road trip.
Erie would go on a shooting spree in the first period, grabbing a 17-10 shot advantage against London. Unfortunately for the Otters, Knights goaltender Zach Bowen would come out ready to stop what came his way, playing a shutout first period. Nolan Lalonde would stop 9/10 on the other side, with the lone goal coming on the second power play of the evening for London. With a perfect pass from Ruslan Gazizov, Denver Barkey (15) would strike and earn London a 1-0 lead. A hard-fought first would see Erie hungry for a tie game to start the second.
After a solid battle in the first period, the London Knights would pull away in a big way in period two, scoring four goals enroute to a 5-0 lead after 40. Scoring would start for London 3:08 into the frame as Ryan Humphrey (10) would get the game's first even-strength goal. Near the halfway mark of the game, London's captain Sean McGurn (24) would remain atop team-scoring to make it 3-0. Back on the power play for London, Logan Mailloux (18) would score his fourth power play goal against the Otters in two games. With an Erie power play due up, a two-on-one would develop for the Knights that would turn into a goal for Max McCue (9) to make it 5-0 London. The Knights would outshoot the Otters 8-7 in the middle frame, with Erie still leading shots 24-18.
The first 10 minutes of period three would be similar to that of the second period, as the London Knights would strike for three. 1:45 into the final frame, Denver Barkey (16) would collect his second goal of the night. Just under four minutes later, Ethan MacKinnon (3) would earn his first goal of 2023 from Max McCue. Just past the halfway mark of the period, Jacob Julien (5) would score what would be the final goal for the London Knights to make it 8-0. Erie would finally get on the board a little over a minute later, as Malcolm Spence (12) would collect a knuckle-puck rebound in front and swipe it under Bowen to end the shutout and get Erie on the board. This would give Spence goals in back-to-back games. Erie would battle to the end, but fall to the Knights 8-1.
The Erie Otters head back to Erie to prepare for their furthest road trip of the season, the northern swing. Erie will battle the North Bay Battalion on Thursday, the Sudbury Wolves on Friday, and against Western Conference foe, the Soo Greyhounds, on Saturday. Erie will not see home ice for a game until February 25 when they host Sudbury.
