Manchester Wolves News Release
The arenafootball2 league office announced today that Manchester Wolves' OS Steve "Speedy" Gonzalez was named the af2 Schutt Offensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday night in a 59-45 Manchester win over East Division rival Albany during Week 4.
Gonzalez (6-0, 185) played what was easily his best game in a Wolves uniform against the Conquest. The San Jose, CA. native caught 11 passes for 96 yards and five touchdowns, while returning five kickoffs for 127 yards and an electrifying touchdown. Gonzalez, who predicted to a local newspaper earlier in the week that he would have a big game, came within two points of tying former Wolves' star J.J. McKelvey's franchise record for points in a game (38) while tying McKelvey's record for most touchdowns scored in a game with his six scores.
"He took over the game single-handedly," said Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett. " Albany had no answer for him, and that's why I brought him in here. I think he's going to get better down the stretch."
This is the third consecutive week that a Wolves' player has taken home an individual weekly league award. Jamaal Perry earned the "Cutters Catch of the Week" during Week 2, while Allistair Sebastien brought home the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his effort during Week 3.
Gonzalez has been one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the whole af2 this season. He ranks second in the league in kick returns for touchdown, fourth in all-purpose yards per game, tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns (8), tied for fifth in scoring per game, tied for sixth in receptions per game and seventh in kick return yards.
Last season as a rookie in San Diego, Gonzalez led the af2 in kick return yards (1,666) and kick return touchdowns (6), and was fourth in all-purpose yards.
The Wolves (2-1) take to Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against the W-B Scranton Pioneers (3-0) for Canobie Lake Park Night / Kids Run The Wolves Day presented by The Union Leader and Canobie Lake Park. Everyone in attendance will receive a FREE Canobie Lake Park Pass!!!
