April 25, 2006 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Tennessee Valley wide receiver/defensive back TERRENCE JEFFERSON, Manchester offensive specialist/kick returner STEVE GONZALEZ and Tulsa defensive specialist JAMES SADLER have been named the U.S. Army Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 4 of the 2006 season. In addition to these three awards, the recipient of the Cutters Catch of the Week Award goes to Florida wide receiver/defensive back BRITTNEY TELLIS. The Catch of the Week is a new honor that highlights the player who makes the best catch of the week.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Jefferson (5-7, 170, Midwestern State), in his rookie af2 season, had an impressive individual showing for the Tennessee Valley Vipers in their narrow, 55-58, Week 4 home loss to Macon on Saturday. He scorched the Knights for five touchdowns, including two 57-yard kick returns, two receiving scores (6 and 18 yards) and one rushing touchdown. He finished with 160 total kick return yards and six receptions for 63 yards. This is the first Ironman of the Week Award of Jefferson's career and the second league honor for a Tennessee Valley player this season. Fellow rookie Rashad Gibbs (OL/DL) won ADT Defensive Player of the Week following his strong Week 2 performance.
SCHUTT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gonzalez (6-0, 180, Menlo) was an offensive force for the Wolves in their 59-45 Week 4 home win against Albany, their long-time East Division rivals. The second-year man from Menlo set a new af2 season high in points scored against the Conquest, recording 36 on six total touchdowns. "Speedy" caught 11 passes for 96 yards and five touchdowns, and also collected 127 yards on five kick returns, including his first kickoff return for a touchdown this season (56-yard second quarter score). This is the first Offensive Player of the Week Award of Gonzalez' career and the third league honor for the Wolves this season (Allistair Sebastien - ADT Defensive Player of the Week for Week 3: Jamaal Perry - Cutter Catch of the Week for Week 1).
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sadler (6-0, 205, SW Oklahoma State), in his second af2 season, stood out in the secondary to help lead the Talons to a convincing, 72-3, Week 4 home win against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Sadler, who posted a team-high 9.5 tackles and also had a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown, was one of the stars of a stingy Tulsa defense that forced eight sacks (tying the fifth-highest game total in league history) and five interceptions. The Talons five interceptions tied a franchise record. The end result was Tulsa's most lopsided win in franchise history. This is the first weekly award of Sadler's career.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
Florida wide receiver/defensive back Brittney Tellis (5-9, 180, Florida Atlantic), who is in his rookie season in the af2, is the Week 4 recipient of the new Cutters Catch of the Week Award, a weekly honor that has emerged this year to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Tellis' catch was a one-handed, 29-yard third quarter grab that set up a one-yard touchdown run by teammate Deon Dyer on the next play from scrimmage. Tellis finished with two catches for 39 yards to aid Florida in its thrilling, 60-55, come-from-behind home victory against the defending ArenaCup Champion Memphis Xplorers.
