Vermont Mountaineers News Release
New Bedford, Massachusetts - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 1-0 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the New Bedford Bay Sox on Saturday evening. New Bedford walked off on the Mountaineers, scoring the lone run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 23-12 on the summer, but remain two and a half games ahead of Sanford in the Northern Division standings, as the Mainers also lost on Saturday night.
The second baseman and number nine man in the Bay Sox order, Devin Perry (Fisher) ripped a game-winning RBI single over Vermont centerfielder Chandler Brock's (Alabama-Huntsville) head in the ninth. Pinch runner Anthony Seminaris (Fullerton) scored from second on the play. The inning started with Lorenzo Papa (Broward) reaching on a bloop single to left. Two batters after Chris Travers (Roger Williams) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Perry knocked the winning hit.
New Bedford starter Jimmy Gutowski (Eckerd) earned his first win of the summer to improve to 1-3. He went the distance, dealing nine innings of shutout ball. Gutowski allowed eight hits and one walk. He struck out three.
Vermont starter Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) also pitched very well. He hurled six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits and one walk. He struck out four.
Jim McDade (Millersville) came on in relief of Davis and pitched well despite taking the loss to move to 4-2 on the summer. The right-hander threw two and two-thirds innings, allowing just the one run on three hits. He struck out one.
The Mountaineers return to action Sunday evening, when they take on the Ocean State Waves in a 6:05 meeting at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
