Southern League Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Awards

August 13, 2007 - Southern League (SL1) News Release

Hitter of the Week

DAVID COOK, OF, BIRMINGHAM BARONS

David Cook had big shoes to fill upon his promotion from Class-A Winston-Salem on August 3. So far, he has had little trouble assuming the role of power-hitting right fielder left vacant when 2007 Southern League Home Run Derby champion Thomas Collaro was promoted to Triple-A Charlotte. In 10 games since his promotion, Cook has batted .457 with seven home runs, 15 RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.086. The 26-year-old Cook capped a personal three-game home run-hitting streak with a pair of blasts and five RBI in a 9-2 victory at Mobile on August 7. After going without a homer the next day, he began another three-game home run streak with a three-run blast at Huntsville on Thursday. A native of Columbus, OH, Cook collected three hits, including a two-run homer, as the Barons ended the Stars' eight-game winning streak with a 6-2 victory on Friday. Cook went deep again in the first inning of Saturday's 6-4 triumph, giving him league-leading totals of six home runs and 13 RBI during the week.

Pitcher of the Week

BLAKE McGINLEY, LHP, CAROLINA MUDCATS

Buoyed by back-to-back impressive outings from McGinley, the Mudcats won four times in a six-game span to climb back to the .500 mark (25-25) in the second half. Aside from a double and a walk in the third inning, McGinley retired the other 17 batters he faced in a 4-2 win against West Tenn on August 7. The 28-year-old McGinley was nearly as effective in his next start five days later, a 4-3 win at South Division-leading Jacksonville. McGinley allowed just a pair of singles and a walk in six scoreless innings to win his third straight start. He also drove in what proved to be the deciding run in the fourth inning, bringing home Jai Miller from third base on a squeeze play to give Carolina a 4-0 advantage. It was McGinley's first RBI since joining the professional ranks in 2001. A native of Frisco, TX who attended Texas Tech, McGinley has gone 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA since joining Carolina's rotation in mid-July.
