South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks closed a three game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on a winning note in front of 4,183 school children at Coveleski Stadium on Thursday morning. The South Bend offense pounded out thirteen hits and drew nine walks en route to an 8-3 victory, allowing the Hawks to take their fifth straight series.

Jesus Campos walked against J.R. Bradley (W, 2-7) to lead off the third inning and scored the ballgame's first run for the Kernels on Wes Hatton's ground out.

The Silver Hawks responded in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 3-1 lead on Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Brian Diemer (L, 5-4). Chris Jarrett singled on a bunt and scored on Roberto Rodriguez's double to right field. With two outs, Diemer issued three straight walks, plating Rodriguez and Raul Navarro, who reached earlier on a single.

It became an 8-1 lead for the host Silver Hawks as the offense pushed across five more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jarrett walked and crossed home plate on a Ramon Castillo doubled that ultimately forced the Kernels to go to the bullpen. Lefthander Dakota Robinson retired his first batter faced, but then allowed four consecutive base hits. Navarro scored Castillo on a single, while Ender Inciarte hit home Navarro. Robinson gave up an RBI single to Mike Freeman as Inciarte scored and Raywilly Gomez knocked home Freeman on a base hit.

The Kernels tallied a lone run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Brandon Decker singled with one out in the sixth and later scored off Bradley on a double by Jeremy Cruz. The run was unearned due to an error charged to Inciarte. In the seventh, an errant throw to home plate by South Bend centerfielder Inciarte allowed Jerod Yakubik to score on Hatton's line drive base hit, which came against reliever Keith Cantwell.

Jeremy Erben pitched the ballgame's final two innings for the Silver Hawks, allowing only one hit and striking out two to keep the lead intact. With the win, South Bend moves back to two games above .500 at 28-26 on the season.

The Silver Hawks welcome the Quad Cities River Bandits (St. Louis Cardinals) to town for a three game set beginning Friday evening. LHP David Holmberg (4-3, 3.67 ERA) will start for South Bend against RHP Zach Russell (1-5, 5.82). Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
